Gabriel Attal wants to ban the veil for children under 15 and advocates "a second separatist law"
Gabriel Attal, who heads Renaissance, wants to ban the veil for those under 15 and advocates "a second separatist law."

Renaissance, led by Gabriel Attal, wants to ban the veil in public spaces for minors under the age of fifteen, and advocates a "second separatism law" after the one adopted in 2021, we learned from the party on Tuesday, confirming information from Le Parisien .

A government-commissioned report on the Muslim Brotherhood points to a "threat to national cohesion" with the development of Islamism "from below" at the municipal level, according to the text, which is to be examined by the Defense Council on Wednesday.

The authors of this text are particularly concerned about a "rigorization of religious practice," with an "explosion in the number of young girls wearing an abaya and the massive and visible increase in little girls wearing the veil." This phenomenon affects young girls "sometimes [aged] 5-6 years old," which "appears to be supported by a powerful Wahhabi-Salafist network."

Renaissance therefore proposes "to ban the wearing of the veil in public spaces for minors under 15, particularly because it seriously undermines gender equality and child protection." The party, which will hold a thematic convention on sovereign issues on Monday, wants to establish "a crime of coercion into wearing the veil against parents who force their underage daughters to wear the veil."

Renaissance also advocates the adoption of a "second separatism law called the 'law against Islamist entryism'", following the one adopted in 2021, supported by the then Minister of the Interior, Gérald Darmanin.

This text would create a "communitarianism offense which will complement the separatism offense", "punishing the call to reject the laws of the Republic or the desire to impose rules in a territory or an association contrary to those of the Republic".

Renaissance will hold the first restitution of the thematic conventions initiated by Gabriel Attal , who has led the party since December, on Monday. Economic and social issues will be the subject of a convention on June 10. The one devoted to ecology is scheduled for the end of June.
